8GB vs 16GB Versions of the Same GPU: Is the Used Premium Worth It?

Three recent mid-range cards were sold in two memory sizes: the RTX 5060 Ti, the RTX 4060 Ti and the RX 9060 XT. The 8GB and 16GB versions use the same chip, so the gap between them is a clean read on what extra VRAM actually buys. Almost everything else is held constant.

This post puts used eBay prices next to benchmark results for each pair, so you can see what the 16GB premium costs and what it returns. For a wider look at which cards have 12GB or 16GB, see our post on used 12GB vs 16GB graphics cards.

What the 16GB versions cost used

These are median asking prices for used cards from US eBay sellers in our price data, as of October 30, 2026. They are asking prices, not sold prices, and they move. Open a card's page for today's numbers.

Card 8GB 16GB Premium
RTX 5060 Ti $450 $700 +$250 (+56%)
RTX 4060 Ti $360 $650 +$290 (+81%)
RX 9060 XT $400 not enough listings n/a

We don't have enough used RX 9060 XT 16GB listings for a reliable median, so there's no price for it here. That's common for newer cards: not many have reached the used market yet.

The premium is large. On the RTX 4060 Ti, the 16GB card costs almost double the 8GB one.

What the extra memory buys

Tom's Hardware's GPU benchmarks hierarchy (dated June 2026) lists average frame rates at Ultra settings, rasterization only, for both versions of each card. Here they are at 1080p / 1440p / 4K.

Card 1080p 1440p 4K
RTX 5060 Ti 8GB 100.4 68.6 28.1
RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 105.2 73.4 40.2
16GB advantage +5% +7% +43%
RTX 4060 Ti 8GB 88.0 58.9 23.9
RTX 4060 Ti 16GB 89.3 60.5 31.3
16GB advantage +1% +3% +31%
RX 9060 XT 8GB 93.2 62.5 29.7
RX 9060 XT 16GB 98.3 67.3 35.2
16GB advantage +5% +8% +19%

The pattern is the same for all three:

  • At 1080p the difference is small. Between 1% and 5%. The 16GB card is not meaningfully faster in the average game.
  • At 1440p it grows a little. Between 3% and 8%.
  • At 4K it's large. Between 19% and 43%.

Remember what these are: averages across a set of games at Ultra settings. At 4K Ultra, some of those games want more than 8GB, and when a card runs out of memory its frame rate drops sharply. That is what pulls the 8GB averages down. A 4K average of 28 FPS also isn't a setting anyone in this price class should plan to play at, so it shows where the memory limit sits, not what you'd actually run.

One more caveat: an average hides the difference between games. An 8GB card can be fine in most of a library and struggle in one or two recent titles at high texture settings. The average can't tell you which game you'll play.

Cost per frame

Here is what that premium works out to for the RTX cards, dividing the used asking price by the average FPS (lower is better):

Card 1080p 1440p 4K
RTX 5060 Ti 8GB $4.48 per FPS $6.56 $16.01
RTX 5060 Ti 16GB $6.65 $9.54 $17.41
RTX 4060 Ti 8GB $4.09 $6.11 $15.06
RTX 4060 Ti 16GB $7.28 $10.74 $20.77

At 1080p and 1440p the 8GB cards are much cheaper per frame. At 4K the gap narrows to almost nothing on the 5060 Ti, because the 8GB card starts to run out of memory. Our GPU value tool ranks used cards by FPS per dollar and lets you switch between resolutions, if you want to compare these against other cards.

Who should pay for 16GB

Stay with 8GB if you play at 1080p, or you mostly play esports and older games. The benchmark gap is a few percent and the price gap is $250 to $290. That money is better spent on a faster GPU tier, or kept.

Pay for 16GB if:

  • You play at 1440p with high-resolution texture packs or newer games that use a lot of memory.
  • You game at 4K, or plan to. This is where the benchmarks show a real gap.
  • You want to run AI models locally. Memory capacity decides which models fit at all, and speed matters less. That's a different question from frame rates, and the averages above don't measure it.
  • You keep cards for years. Games tend to ask for more memory over time, and an 8GB card has less room.

The 1440p case is the grey area. The averages say 8GB is nearly as fast, but averages include games that fit comfortably. If you already know the games you'll play use more than 8GB at your settings, the 16GB card earns its price. If you don't, the cheaper card is a reasonable bet.

A used 16GB card from a previous generation can also be an alternative to paying the premium on a newer one. Our 12GB vs 16GB post lists several.

Buying the right memory size on eBay

The 8GB and 16GB cards are sold under the same model name, so the title often doesn't tell you which one you're getting. Some sellers leave the memory size out, and some get it wrong.

  1. Look for the memory size in the title, and check it against the item specifics. If a listing just says "RTX 4060 Ti", it could be either, and the 8GB card is the more common one used.
  2. Check the photos. The box, the sticker on the card, or a GPU-Z screenshot show the real memory size. Stock photos show you nothing.
  3. Be wary of a 16GB price on a listing that never says 16GB. If the price looks like the 16GB card but the listing doesn't state the memory anywhere, ask the seller.
  4. Ask for a GPU-Z screenshot if the memory size is the reason you're buying.
  5. Confirm it when the card arrives. If it's not the memory size you paid for, that's a "not as described" return under eBay's Money Back Guarantee.

Getting alerts for the right version

A saved eBay search for "RTX 4060 Ti" returns both memory sizes, and the price gap between them means a good price for one is a bad price for the other. Each of the six cards above has its own page: RTX 5060 Ti 8GB, RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, RTX 4060 Ti 8GB, RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, RX 9060 XT 8GB and RX 9060 XT 16GB. The full list of used prices is in the used GPU price index.
