Telling it apart. Listings often name "M2 Pro" in the title, but the About This Mac screenshot is the proof: it should read Apple M2 Pro, not plain M2 and not M4 Pro. Sellers sometimes carry the chip name over from the model they are comparing against, so a title mentioning two chips deserves a second look.
Configurations that move the price. Memory and storage drive the spread between listings of the same machine. A higher-memory or larger-storage unit asks noticeably more than a base configuration, and asking prices for upgraded units are not always proportional to the premium Apple charged. Compare like for like (same memory, same storage) before calling anything a deal. Chip variant (the lower or higher core count of the M2 Pro) also shifts asking prices, so check which one the listing shows.
Network option. Some units were built with the faster Ethernet option. Sellers who have it tend to say so in the title, and it can justify a small premium.
Traps seen while tuning. The search is full of docks, SSD enclosures and upgrade kits written for the M4 Pro mini, plus stands, mounts and replacement boards that name the M2 Pro. The feed keeps these out, but a seller-written "for parts" or "board only" ad filed under a computer category is worth a second glance in the photos.
Buying a used Mac mini: what to check

Used
- Ask for a photo of the About This Mac screen showing the chip, memory and storage. Configurations of one model differ a lot in price.
- Ask the seller to confirm Find My is turned off and the Mac is signed out of their Apple ID. An Activation-Locked Mac can't be set up without the previous owner.
- Ask whether it was a company or school machine. A Mac enrolled in remote management (MDM) can lock itself to that organisation after a reset.
- For a laptop, ask for the battery cycle count and condition from System Information, and check the photos for screen coating wear and dents on the corners.
Refurbished
- Find out who refurbished it (Apple or a third party) and how long the warranty is.
- Enter the serial number on Apple's coverage check page to confirm the model and any remaining coverage.
New
- Check the box is sealed and the serial on the box matches the listing, then check coverage with Apple once it arrives.
- Very low prices on "new" Macs from new seller accounts are the most common scam on this category.
