Identify the exact model from the machine, not the title. Open About This Mac: the chip line should read "Apple M2 Max", not "Apple M2 Pro", and the screen should be the 14-inch panel. Some sellers paste more than one chip into a title (an "M2 Pro" headline with "M2 Max" further along), so confirm against a system-info screenshot or the listing's item specifics before you trust the headline.
Configurations move the price more than condition does. Listings for this model come with different GPU core counts, memory sizes and storage sizes, and asking prices spread widely with them. More unified memory, a larger SSD and the higher GPU core count raise the price. Compare like for like (same memory, same storage, same core count) before calling something a deal, because memory and storage can't be upgraded later.
Traps we saw while tuning. The 16-inch M2 Max turns up under near-identical titles and is a separate machine at a different price; this feed holds it out, along with the M2 Pro. Used listings that say "screen issue" or "read description" are flawed machines that may be priced as if they were fine, so read the description before comparing them with clean units. Several of the cheapest used asks were of that kind.
Buying a used MacBook Pro: what to check

- Ask for a photo of the About This Mac screen showing the chip, memory and storage. Configurations of one model differ a lot in price.
- Ask the seller to confirm Find My is turned off and the Mac is signed out of their Apple ID. An Activation-Locked Mac can't be set up without the previous owner.
- Ask whether it was a company or school machine. A Mac enrolled in remote management (MDM) can lock itself to that organisation after a reset.
- For a laptop, ask for the battery cycle count and condition from System Information, and check the photos for screen coating wear and dents on the corners.
Refurbished
- Find out who refurbished it (Apple or a third party) and how long the warranty is.
- Enter the serial number on Apple's coverage check page to confirm the model and any remaining coverage.
New
- Check the box is sealed and the serial on the box matches the listing, then check coverage with Apple once it arrives.
- Very low prices on "new" Macs from new seller accounts are the most common scam on this category.
