Samsung 980 Pro 2TB — Price Guide & Live Deals

The Samsung 980 Pro is the generation before the Samsung 990 Pro, and there is still plenty of it on eBay: used drives pulled from PCs and consoles, open-box units, and a steady stream of listings sold as new. On a search results page it's easy to confuse with its successor, with the cheaper EVO line, with other capacities, and with an OEM drive that sellers often label "980 Pro".

This page filters a live eBay feed down to single 2TB Samsung 980 Pro drives from US sellers with established feedback, with or without the factory heatsink. It excludes other capacities, the 990 and 970 lines, anything titled EVO, listings that lead with the OEM PM9A1 name, multi-drive lots, complete PCs, laptops and NAS units that happen to contain the drive, parts-only and untested drives, and empty boxes. Use the condition chips to switch between Used, Refurbished and New. Prices in the table are asking prices from currently-active listings, not completed sales.

Which Samsung 980 Pro you're actually buying

Confirm the capacity. The 980 Pro comes in several capacities under one name. The listing's item specifics carry a Storage Capacity field, which read 2TB on the listings inspected for this page. Check that field. Some titles give no capacity at all, only a part number.

The retail part number is the most precise identifier. 2TB retail listings on this search carry part numbers beginning MZ-V8P2T0. Sellers use the suffix to tell the two retail versions apart:

• MZ-V8P2T0B/AM and similar …B forms appear on listings described as having no heatsink. This is the bare M.2 2280 stick.
• MZ-V8P2T0CW appears on listings described as the heatsink version, and sellers often market it as "PS5 Ready".

Both are the same 2TB 980 Pro, and this page shows both. The heatsink version is taller than a bare stick, so check it fits the slot it's going into. A console bay is one fit; a laptop, or a motherboard slot under its own cover plate, is another. Measure before you buy.

The drives that aren't a retail 980 Pro

The OEM PM9A1. Several listings on this search sold a Samsung PM9A1, with a part number beginning MZ-VL22T0 or MZVL22T0, and called it "980 Pro" or "980 Pro OEM" in the title. Sellers treat the two as equivalent. They are not the same purchase: OEM drives are made for PC manufacturers and are not sold as retail boxed products. We haven't verified how they differ in firmware or warranty, and you shouldn't assume the retail terms apply. The feed excludes listings that lead with PM9A1.

Watch the part number, not just the title. One listing that passed this filter titled itself "980 Pro 2TB With Heatsink" and quoted an MZVL22T0… part number in the title, while its item specifics listed the retail MZ-V8P2T0B/AM part number and Manufacturer Warranty: No. The title and the specifics can disagree. If the part number anywhere in the listing doesn't begin MZ-V8P2T0, ask the seller which drive it is, and what warranty comes with it, before you pay a retail price.

The 990 Pro and the 970 line. Some sellers list several Samsung generations in one listing ("970 EVO Plus / 980 / 990 PRO"). Those are multi-variation listings across different drives and capacities, and this feed excludes them. If you're weighing the 980 Pro against its successor, the 990 Pro 2TB page runs the same kind of feed. Compare the two before you assume the older drive is the cheaper one.

Other capacities. 500GB and 1TB 980 Pro listings show up in the same searches. A mislabelled smaller drive can look like a bargain.

Used vs refurbished vs new Samsung 980 Pro 2TB

Used is a large share of this feed. An SSD has no moving parts, but its flash memory wears as data is written. You can't see that wear in photos. The best used listings on this search showed it anyway: one seller's description quoted a CrystalDiskInfo report with the drive's health percentage, total data written, power-on hours, error counts and firmware version, and included a screenshot. That's the standard to hold a used listing to. Titles such as "100% Health", "Low Hours" and "Tested 100% Healthy" are claims until you see the screenshot. This page does not filter on drive health, because the profile can't see it.

Refurbished covers several eBay grades, depending on who did the refurbishing: Samsung, a commercial refurbisher, or the seller. The listing won't necessarily tell you which. No US refurbished 980 Pro 2TB listings passed this filter when this page was built, so the Refurbished chip may often be empty.

New on this page includes Open box. For a component, open box means unused but unsealed. That puts it with New rather than in a separate tier. A lot of the new supply for this drive is sealed retail stock, often the heatsink version. The chips read the listing title as well as eBay's condition dropdown, and the title wins. A drive titled "sealed" counts as New even if the dropdown says otherwise. One titled "as is" or "untested" is kept out of the priced buckets instead of being averaged into Used.

What this Samsung 980 Pro 2TB feed filters out, and why it matters

Every pattern below came out of the live listing data while this page's filter was being built.

Whole systems that contain the drive. The largest group of listings rejected for their titles was complete gaming PCs, gaming laptops, a NAS unit and a RAM bundle. Each named "Samsung 980 Pro 2TB" in the title, because the drive is a selling point. They show up in a drive search and they aren't drive listings.

Multi-drive and multi-generation listings. Lots, and variation listings that cover several capacities or several Samsung generations at once. The price shown in search results for a variation listing belongs to one of its options, and not necessarily the 2TB 980 Pro.

Asking prices far above the going rate. Some "new" listings, many from overseas, asked far more than the rest of the New bucket. The feed has a price ceiling for that reason. It keeps the page readable. It isn't a judgment on any individual seller.

Overseas listings. This page is filtered to verified US item locations, for shipping, returns and warranty-claim reasons.

Low-feedback sellers. The single biggest group of rejected listings came from accounts with little feedback history, several of them priced attractively. This page requires established seller feedback. That drops some honest first-time sellers along with the rest. It's a deliberate trade.

Parts-only and untested drives. Excluded at the profile level. Anything that slips through on wording is bucketed separately, not averaged into Used.

Samsung 980 Pro 2TB: before you buy

Any condition. Confirm Storage Capacity in the item specifics, and confirm the part number begins MZ-V8P2T0. Decide whether you want the heatsink version, and check it fits. Confirm the seller accepts returns. A drive that isn't detected, or that reports poor health on arrival, is one you want to be able to send back.

Used. Ask for a screenshot of the drive's health report from a tool such as Samsung Magician or CrystalDiskInfo, taken by the seller on this specific drive. The fields that matter are the health or percentage-used figure, total data written, power-on hours, and the firmware version. The 980 Pro was the subject of widely reported drive-health problems on early firmware, which Samsung addressed with a firmware update. So ask which firmware the drive is on and check it against the current version on Samsung's site. Then check the health yourself as soon as the drive arrives, while the return window is open.

Refurbished. Find out who refurbished it and what warranty comes with it. "Refurbished" with no named refurbisher and no warranty is used by another name, and should be priced like used. Ask for the same health screenshot.

New. Ask whether it's sealed, and check that the part number on the box matches the listing. Samsung's consumer SSD warranty is limited by both time and total data written, whichever runs out first, and the 980 Pro has been on sale long enough that time matters. Check the current terms on Samsung's own site before you count on the warranty for a drive bought second-hand. That includes whether a claim needs proof of purchase from an authorised seller.

On price. The heatsink and non-heatsink versions both sit in this feed, so compare like with like. Read the table by condition bucket rather than anchoring on the single lowest number. If a listing is far below the rest of the Used bucket, ask the seller why before you treat it as a deal. On this search, the usual answers were a different capacity, an OEM drive, or a multi-drive listing.
