How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one part. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different part that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 18 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 16 of 18 (~89%) for quality reasons. The remaining 2 are what we'd actually surface.
- 13 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 2 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 1 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for EPYC 7742 returns far more than the part itself: laptop chips, mining rigs, coolers, empty boxes and whole PCs all mention it in their titles. These are the 91 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to EPYC 7742 because they are: that's the noise.

EPYC 7742: buyer & reseller spec sheet
Exact SKU identity. The EPYC 7742 is a 64-core, 128-thread Zen 2 "Rome" server processor for Socket SP3. Sellers often list it in a string of neighbouring model numbers (7702, 7642, 7K62 and so on), so read the title for the model you are actually getting. Listings that name the 7742 only as a supported CPU are motherboards or coolers, not processors.
Variants & value impact. The big price lever is vendor lock. Many used 7742s were pulled from OEM servers and are locked to that vendor's boards (Dell-locked chips are the common case). A locked chip will not work in a generic SP3 board and is asking-priced well below an unlocked one. Titles say "unlocked", "no vendor lock" or "Dell lock"; ask the seller to confirm in writing before buying, since a lock cannot be seen in photos. OEM-branded part numbers and retail-style part numbers both appear in listings, and the part number alone does not tell you the lock status.
Listing traps. Engineering and qualification samples (marked ES or QS) turn up under the same name. They can run at different clocks and are not the production part, so the feed leaves them out. Look-alike 64-core Rome parts such as the 7V12 and 7B12 are sometimes titled "close to" or "cheaper than" a 7742; they are different CPUs and the feed leaves them out as well.
Buying a used processor: what to check
These checks apply to every processor on our CPU pages. The item notes above cover what is specific to this model.
Used
- Ask for a clear, close photo of the pins or contact pads, wherever the socket keeps them. Bent pins are the most common failure.
- Confirm the model printed on the heat spreader matches the listing, and ask for a screenshot of the chip identified in the OS or BIOS.
- Ask whether it was overclocked or delidded. Neither is a dealbreaker, but both should be disclosed.
Refurbished
- Find out who tested it and what the return window is.
New
- Check whether it is a boxed retail chip or a tray chip. Tray chips usually ship without a cooler and with a different warranty.
