How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 143 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 100 of 143 (~70%) for quality reasons. The remaining 43 are what we'd actually surface.
- 59 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 25 shipped from a region we exclude
- 9 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 4 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 2 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
- 1 wrong condition (e.g. parts-only)
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Metroid II: Return of Samus (Game Boy) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 100 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Metroid II: Return of Samus (Game Boy) because they are: that's the noise.

Metroid II: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Product code & save. US carts are coded
DMG-ME-USA; sellers often print it in the title, and it is the quickest way to confirm a US copy. Progress saves to battery-backed memory on the cart. The original save battery is a flat coin cell, and cells this old routinely fail, so budget for a battery swap whatever the listing says. "New battery, saves" listings have usually been opened for that work. - Japanese copies with an identical title. The Japanese release carries the same English name, and many Japanese-market listings read word-for-word like US ones. The feed drops listings shipping from Japan or labelled Japanese, but check the label and the product code on anything you find elsewhere before paying a US price.
- Paper-only listings. Manuals and the Nintendo Power poster insert sell on their own under the full game title, at prices close to a loose cart. Read the title for "manual only" or "poster" before assuming a cart is included.
- Not the 3DS remake. "Metroid: Samus Returns" is a later remake on different hardware. The NES original is Metroid; the series continues with Super Metroid on SNES.
Buying Game Boy games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Game Boy cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
