- Not the PlayStation game. This is Konami's separate Game Boy Color release (2000, US), a different game from the PS1 Metal Gear Solid. Sellers mix the two in titles, so check the platform before you buy.
- Saves: the cartridge saves progress. Original save batteries in 20+ year-old carts can fail, so budget for a battery swap regardless of seller claims. A "new battery" listing is a plus, but ask who did the work.
- Print variants: be wary of any seller pitching a rare "first print" without a close photo of the label.
- Regional copies are the main trap. The same game also shipped as Metal Gear: Ghost Babel in Japan, and as Brazilian and PAL releases. They are cheaper or pricier than the US copy and are not interchangeable with it. Look for NTSC-U/C wording and a US-style label, and read the seller's photos rather than the title.

Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
