How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 187 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 117 of 187 (~63%) for quality reasons. The remaining 70 are what we'd actually surface.
- 55 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 21 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 16 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
- 7 shipped from a region we exclude
- 7 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 6 priced above the curated ceiling
- 5 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Pokemon Trading Card Game (Game Boy) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 111 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Pokemon Trading Card Game (Game Boy) because they are: that's the noise.

Pokemon Trading Card Game: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Save and platform. Progress saves to battery-backed memory on the cart, so a dead cell means no saves even when the game boots. Listings that say "tested saves" or "new battery" are the ones to favour for loose copies. Sellers file it under both Game Boy and Game Boy Color, and this feed takes both.
- Product code. Check the code on the label matches the US release. A Japanese code on the label means an import, whatever the title says.
- The promo card. Complete-copy listings often name a Meowth promo card packed with the game. Copies marked "missing card" or "card not included" are otherwise boxed but lack it, and their asking prices usually sit below full CIB copies. Confirm the card is in the photos before paying a CIB price.
- Japanese carts under the English name. The Japanese release (Pokemon Card GB) is often listed as "Pokemon Trading Card Game" at a fraction of the US price. Japanese titles and sellers in Japan are filtered out, but check the label art and language before buying a cheap copy from any other source.
- Not a sequel. The second game (Team GR) was only released in Japan. A listing calling itself "Trading Card Game 2" is a Japanese cart.
Often bundled with Pokemon Red and Pokemon Yellow; bundles are kept out of this feed.
Buying Game Boy games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Game Boy cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
