How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 2889 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 2776 of 2889 (~96%) for quality reasons. The remaining 113 are what we'd actually surface.
- 2708 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 37 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 15 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 12 shipped from a region we exclude
- 2 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
- 1 wrong condition (e.g. parts-only)
- 1 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Metroid (NES) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 125 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Metroid (NES) because they are: that's the noise.

Metroid: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Product code & save. US carts and boxes carry the code
NES-MT-USA, and some sellers print it in the title. Metroid has no save battery: progress is kept with on-screen passwords, so there is no cell to fail and "tested" means the cart boots and plays. - 5-screw vs 3-screw carts. Early NES carts were held together with five screws; later runs use three. Sellers call out "5 screw" copies as the early variant and often ask more for them. Both are authentic; check the back of the cart against the listing claim.
- Classic Series and label variants. Copies sold in Nintendo's later "Classic Series" packaging turn up regularly, and sellers also label listings "yellow label" or "silver". These are different printings of the same US game, so compare like with like when judging an asking price.
- GBA re-release with the same name. "Classic NES Series: Metroid" is a 2004 Game Boy Advance cart listed with the identical title, and it won't play on an NES. The feed leaves it out, but check for GBA or Game Boy Advance in any listing you find elsewhere. Its full remake is Metroid: Zero Mission; the SNES sequel is Super Metroid.
Buying NES games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every NES cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
