How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 2611 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 2555 of 2611 (~98%) for quality reasons. The remaining 56 are what we'd actually surface.
- 2533 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 7 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 7 shipped from a region we exclude
- 4 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
- 2 wrong condition (e.g. parts-only)
- 2 seller had too few feedback ratings
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Metal Gear (NES) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 118 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Metal Gear (NES) because they are: that's the noise.

Metal Gear: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Product code and saves: the US cart carries the code
NES-ME-USA, the code that shows up in seller titles. Progress is kept with passwords rather than a battery, so there is no save cell to fail. Check that the label code matches the US release. - Publisher label: the US release was published under Konami's Ultra Games label, so "Ultra" in a listing title is normal and not a red flag. The Japanese Famicom original is a different cart that sellers often label "NES"; the feed filters those out, but check the label and region on any listing that skips the photos.
- Not the sequel: Snake's Revenge is a separate NES game that sellers routinely tack onto Metal Gear titles. The feed rejects titles naming it, so you will not see it here. The PS1 game is a different title altogether: Metal Gear Solid.
- Listing trap seen while tuning: manual-only, box-only and poster-map inserts are listed under the full game title, often with a loose-cart price. Confirm a cartridge is actually included before you buy.
- Print variants: reprints may exist, but we haven't verified which marks separate them or how they move asking prices.
Buying NES games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every NES cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
