How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 4866 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 4644 of 4866 (~95%) for quality reasons. The remaining 222 are what we'd actually surface.
- 3871 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 652 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 50 shipped from a region we exclude
- 35 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 21 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
- 13 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
- 1 priced above the curated ceiling
- 1 wrong condition (e.g. parts-only)
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Super Smash Bros. (N64) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 111 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Super Smash Bros. (N64) because they are: that's the noise.

Super Smash Bros.: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Region is the main price trap. The US cart is the 1999 HAL Laboratory / Nintendo release. The Japanese original, Nintendo All Star! Dairantou Smash Brothers, sells for a fraction of the US price, and US-based sellers often list it as "Super Smash Bros ... US Seller". Check the product code on the label against a US reference photo. A code ending in
NALJ-JPNmeans a Japanese cart, andNALU-AUSmeans a PAL copy. Japanese carts play in Japanese, and PAL carts won't run on a US console without an adapter. The feed drops the listings that say so in the title. - Saves are stored on the cartridge. Some sellers advertise battery status ("Good Battery", "Fresh Battery"). Treat that as a claim to ask about, not something to pay extra for unless the seller says what was tested.
- "Brand New, US Version" in the low $20s is a reproduction. Several new-condition carts went by during tuning at well below the loose asking floor, worded "video game card" or "for Nintendo 64 ... US Version". Sealed 1999 copies don't trade at that price.
- Modded carts. Fan-patched builds ("v1.4.1 Remix") turn up as "cartridge only" listings. They're aftermarket, not a variant.
Not to be confused with the GameCube sequel, Super Smash Bros. Melee. Smash 64 often appears in lots alongside Mario Kart 64, and the feed leaves those lots out.
Buying Nintendo 64 games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Nintendo 64 cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
