How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 470 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 335 of 470 (~71%) for quality reasons. The remaining 135 are what we'd actually surface.
- 276 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 20 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 17 shipped from a region we exclude
- 11 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
- 3 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
- 3 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 3 priced above the curated ceiling
- 2 wrong condition (e.g. parts-only)
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Final Fantasy VIII (PS1) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 104 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Final Fantasy VIII (PS1) because they are: that's the noise.

Final Fantasy VIII: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Format & save. The US release (Square Electronic Arts, 1999) ships on four discs and saves to a PlayStation memory card. Check the product codes on the discs and spine against the US NTSC-U/C release; each disc carries its own code, so a swapped-in disc from another region stands out.
- Print variants. The original Black Label print and the later Greatest Hits budget reprint are the two US versions. Black Label copies generally ask more than Greatest Hits in the same condition, and sealed copies turn up mostly as Greatest Hits. "CIB" in a title doesn't say which print it is, so check the spine and disc labels in the photos.
- Mini walkthrough. Many complete listings call out a small walkthrough booklet alongside the manual, and sellers price "CIB with mini walkthrough" above copies without it. If a listing says complete, check the photos for it.
- Partial-disc listings. Single discs and "missing disc 2" sets list constantly, often at what looks like a cheap loose price. Count four discs in the photos before you buy.

Buying PlayStation games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every PlayStation disc. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose (disc only)
- Ask for a clear photo of the data side under light. Light surface scratches usually play; deep or circular scratches often don't.
- Check the label art and the printing in the center ring against a known-authentic disc. Burned copies and reprinted labels are the main fakes.
- "Resurfaced" means the disc was polished. It is usually fine to play but worth less to collectors.
CIB (complete in case)
- Confirm the case, front art and manual are all shown, and that the art matches the disc's region.
- Cracked cases are cheap to replace; missing or reprinted cover art and manuals are what cost money.
- For multi-disc games, make sure every disc is pictured.
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
