How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 98 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 56 of 98 (~57%) for quality reasons. The remaining 42 are what we'd actually surface.
- 43 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 5 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 4 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 4 shipped from a region we exclude
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Altered Beast (Genesis) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 101 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Altered Beast (Genesis) because they are: that's the noise.

Altered Beast: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Save mechanism: none. It's a straight arcade port with no save battery, so there is no battery to fail. A "tested" cart that boots and plays is the whole check.
- Product code: check that the label and case say Sega Genesis and match the US release. The product code is not listed here because it isn't in our verified facts file.
- Print variants: an early-run retail print and later budget reprints exist, and they can differ in packaging and case design. A reprint usually sells for less than an early copy, but we haven't confirmed the exact markings, so compare against a known authentic photo.
- Same-name confusion: Altered Beast also shipped on Master System, PC Engine and other platforms. The feed rejects those by name, but a listing that only says "Altered Beast" with a Genesis-looking cart photo is worth a question to the seller.- Asking-price traps: many sellers list Genesis games with "CIB" in the title when the manual or case is missing. Read the photo set before trusting the label. Prices shown are asking prices, not sold prices.
Buying Sega Genesis games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Sega Genesis cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
