How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 56 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 53 of 56 (~95%) for quality reasons. The remaining 3 are what we'd actually surface.
- 34 shipped from a region we exclude
- 18 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 1 seller had too few feedback ratings
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Lightening Force (Genesis) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 101 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Lightening Force (Genesis) because they are: that's the noise.

Lightening Force: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Which game this is: Thunder Force IV is the Japanese title of Technosoft's side-scrolling shooter. The North American Genesis release is titled Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar (1992), so most US listings use that name. The feed matches either title.
- Product code: check that the code printed on the label matches the US release before paying a premium.
- Print variants: don't assume a particular print or label variant moves the price. Ask for clear photos of the label and the back of the cartridge, and compare them with a known authentic copy.
- Series mix-ups: the Thunder Force series has several entries, and Thunder Force III and Thunder Force V are sold under near-identical titles. Read the whole title for the sequel number.
- Complete copies: manuals and cases are often sold on their own. A "case only" or "manual only" listing is not a game, so check exactly what the title says is included before paying a CIB asking price.
Buying Sega Genesis games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Sega Genesis cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
