How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 33 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 23 of 33 (~70%) for quality reasons. The remaining 10 are what we'd actually surface.
- 9 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 6 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 5 shipped from a region we exclude
- 2 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 1 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Ristar (Genesis) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 100 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Ristar (Genesis) because they are: that's the noise.

Ristar: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Save mechanism: none that we know of. Ristar is a straight-through action platformer from Sonic Team, released on the Genesis in North America in 1995, so a cart that boots and plays is a working cart.
- Product code: check that the label's product code and region markings match the US release before paying a CIB premium, and compare against a known authentic photo.
- Print variants: we can't name a distinguishing mark with confidence, so treat any "first print" or "rare variant" claim as unverified and ask for photos of the label and the back of the cart.
- Same-title trap: Ristar also exists as a separate Sega Game Gear game with its own cartridge, and Game Gear listings often say "Sega" in the title. Confirm the listing says Genesis and shows the full-size cart.
- Cheap "Ristar" listings: very low asking prices are often Game Gear copies, unrelated game lots, custom cases or homemade "edition" carts. The feed filters the ones we have seen, but read the title.
- Asking prices: CIB asking prices sit well above loose, and the spread between listings is wide, so use the price table above rather than a single comp.
Buying Sega Genesis games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Sega Genesis cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
