Shining Force: collector & reseller spec sheet
Sega released Shining Force for the Genesis in North America in the early 1990s. Titles carry both 1992 and 1993 as the year, so don't treat the year as a version marker.
- Save mechanism. Battery-backed save. The original cell is around 30 years old, and "needs new battery" listings turn up. Budget for a battery swap whatever the seller claims, and check that the label matches the US Genesis release.
- Sequel and same-name traps. Shining Force II is a separate Genesis cart, and sellers write its number as "II" and "2", often together. The Game Gear "Shining Force Gaiden", the Sega CD "Shining Force CD" and the Saturn "Shining Force III" reuse the name on other hardware. Check the photos show the Genesis cartridge.
- Japanese Mega Drive copies from US sellers. These are listed with "Genesis" as a search word or "US Seller" in the title. They ask less, so read past the shipping location. The feed drops Mega Drive, Japanese and PAL copies.
- "CIB" wording. Many listings write "Complete" or "w/ manual" without saying CIB, and some say "case" for the clamshell. Read the photos for the box, the manual and the cartridge together.

Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
