- Release and save: Sega's falling-jewel puzzle game for the Genesis, first released in 1990. It is a puzzle game with no save feature, so there is no battery to fail.
- Print variants: Reprints may exist, and cases and labels can differ from the original release. Compare the label and case against a known authentic photo and check that the product code matches the US release before paying a premium for any claimed variant.
- Don't confuse with: Columns III: Revenge of Columns is a separate, later game, and Columns also appears inside multi-game compilation carts. The feed rejects titles that name Columns III, and also the multi-game 6-Pak and Triple Score cartridges. Check the title says plain Columns and that the photo shows the single-game cartridge.
- Listing traps: Many "Columns" results are manual-only or case-only, so read the title for "manual only" or "case only" before buying. Search results can also mix in Game Gear Super Columns and Japanese Mega Drive copies; the feed filters these titles, but check photos for the Genesis (US) label on any listing you open directly.
Buying Sega Genesis games: what to check by condition

Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
