Streets of Rage: collector & reseller spec sheet
Sega's 1991 original is the cheapest way into the series on Genesis, but complete copies ask well above loose carts. Condition and completeness drive the price more than rarity.
- Save mechanism. None. There's no battery or save chip, so there's no dead cell to budget for. Check that the label and box match the US Genesis release.
- Print variants. Listings show an early-run retail copy and a later "Sega Classics" budget reprint. Collectors building a set tend to ask more for the early print, and sellers often don't say which they have, so compare the photos.
- Don't mix it up with the sequels. Titles like "Streets of Rage 1 & 2" lots, Streets of Rage 2 and Streets of Rage 3 share keywords with this one, and sequels ask more. The feed drops those, along with Japanese "Bare Knuckle" copies.
- Listing traps seen while tuning. The game also ships inside the Genesis 6-Pak compilation, which is a different product and is excluded. Some listings sell only a box, a manual, a promo card or a replacement shell under the game's name, so confirm a cartridge is included before you bid.

Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
