How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 522 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 326 of 522 (~62%) for quality reasons. The remaining 196 are what we'd actually surface.
- 276 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 25 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 9 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 7 shipped from a region we exclude
- 5 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
- 2 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
- 1 wrong condition (e.g. parts-only)
- 1 priced above the curated ceiling
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 126 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis) because they are: that's the noise.

Sonic 2: collector & reseller spec sheet
Sega released Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Genesis in North America in November 1992. It's one of the most common Genesis carts, so this feed is mostly about finding a clean copy at a fair asking price.
- Save mechanism. None. Sonic 2 has no battery or save chip, so there's no dead save cell to worry about. Before you pay, check that the label and box match the US Genesis release.
- Retail vs Not For Resale. Sega packed Sonic 2 in with Genesis consoles, and those copies are marked "Not For Resale". They're very common, so don't pay a premium for "rare NFR" wording. The standard retail copy is the one collectors usually want for a complete set. Graded and sealed retail copies ask the most.
- Diorama replicas listed as "Sega Genesis Sonic 2". Sellers often list the Console Heroes Emerald Hill Zone mini diorama under the game's own title. It's a toy shaped like a cartridge, not a game, and the feed drops it.
- Same title, different game. The Game Gear and Master System versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are separate 8-bit games, not ports of this cart. The feed excludes them, along with Japanese Mega Drive copies and lots that bundle it with Sonic the Hedgehog.
Buying Sega Genesis games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Sega Genesis cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
