How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 15 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 5 of 15 (~33%) for quality reasons. The remaining 10 are what we'd actually surface.
- 4 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 1 seller had too few feedback ratings
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Shining in the Darkness (Genesis) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 90 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Shining in the Darkness (Genesis) because they are: that's the noise.

Shining in the Darkness: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Release and saves: Shining in the Darkness is a 1991 Sega Genesis dungeon-crawler RPG and the series' first entry, predating Shining Force. Check that the label's product code matches the US release. Because the game keeps save files, treat the internal save battery as a likely failure on a 30-year-old cart and test saving before trusting a seller's "works" claim.
- Print variants: Later budget reprints exist for many Genesis titles. Ask the seller which print they have; the label and case art are the place to compare against a known authentic photo.
- Listing traps: Sellers often list the case or cover art alone under the full game title, and some list the game as a Mega Drive or Brazilian (Tectoy) copy. Read the title and photos for "case only", "cover art only" and import wording before bidding. This feed rejects those, along with multi-game lots and Japanese-seller listings.
Buying Sega Genesis games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every Sega Genesis cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and plastic case and cover art are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
