- Product code & save: the US cartridge is the Nintendo-published 1994 release with an FX coprocessor chip inside. It keeps best times on a battery-backed save, so the original coin cell is about 30 years old. Budget for a battery swap whatever the seller says. Check that the label's product code reads as the US (USA) release.
- Print variants: an early-run retail print and a later budget reprint may exist; don't pay a premium for either claim without a clear label photo.
- Title-specific traps:
- Japanese copies are listed as Wild Trax, often with Super Famicom wording. They are not the US release and sell for far less.
- PAL copies show up regularly. They carry a different product code, and a PAL box is not interchangeable with the NTSC one.
- "For Display Only" / "FOD" retail boxes and manual-only listings appear under the game's name. Confirm the listing includes the cartridge before buying.

Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
