The original save battery is a flat coin cell, and cells this old routinely fail, so budget for a battery swap regardless of seller claims. Sellers who list "battery saves" have usually tested it; treat that as a plus, not a guarantee.
- Product code. Sellers list the US cart as SNS-8X-USA. Check that the label code matches the US release; a SHVC- code means a Japanese Super Famicom copy (sold as Super Donkey Kong), which this page leaves out.
- Print variants. An original retail print and a later budget reprint exist. Original-print boxes generally ask more; confirm which one you're buying from the box photos before paying a premium.
- Same name, different hardware. Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance ports are also titled Donkey Kong Country, and they flood search results. Make sure the listing is the grey SNES cartridge, not a small handheld cart.
- Not the sequels or the trilogy lots. Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 lead with the same three words, and "1 2 3" trilogy lots are common. Read past the title to the number.

Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)

- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
