- Release & save: Donkey Kong is an arcade port that reached the NES in 1986 in North America. It has no save feature, so there is no save battery to fail.
- Title confusion is the main trap. Several other NES carts carry "Donkey Kong" in the name and sit in the same search results: Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, Donkey Kong Jr. Math and the Donkey Kong Classics compilation. Read the full title before you pay. This feed requires "Donkey Kong" in the title and drops listings that name those siblings.

- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.

- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
