How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 33 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 15 of 33 (~45%) for quality reasons. The remaining 18 are what we'd actually surface.
- 13 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 1 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 1 shipped from a region we exclude
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Maniac Mansion (NES) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 115 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Maniac Mansion (NES) because they are: that's the noise.

Maniac Mansion: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Release: the US NES port was published by Jaleco under license from Lucasfilm Games in 1990. The US cart label carries an
NES-JM-USAstyle product code; check that the code on the label matches the US release. - Region trap: the Japanese Famicom version and the PAL (European) release both circulate under "NES" titles. The feed filters out Famicom and PAL copies, but a seller who omits the region from the title is worth a question before you buy.
- CIB extras: sellers commonly list a poster and a registration card with complete copies, so those extras are what separate a full CIB from box-and-manual-only. Ask for photos of every piece claimed.
- Reissue vs original: modern Limited Run Games reissues also say "Maniac Mansion NES" and sell new and sealed. They are a different product from the 1990 Jaleco release, and the feed leaves them out so asking prices stay about original copies.
- Loose carts: many loose listings include a dust sleeve or plastic case. Treat those as extras, not as proof of completeness.
- Printed extras sold alone: the official hint book, posters and spare manuals are listed under the same title. Check that the listing is for the cartridge or box set, not just the paper.
Buying NES games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every NES cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
