How we filter
Every feed has its own filter, tuned by hand for this one game. Before any change goes live, those filters are tested against thousands of real eBay listing titles. Every night, each feed is checked against every other deal page in its category, so a listing for a different game that slips in gets flagged and fixed instead of quietly shown.
Of the 2209 listings we observed for this game in the last 30 days, we filtered out 2130 of 2209 (~96%) for quality reasons. The remaining 79 are what we'd actually surface.
- 1984 matched a bootleg / out-of-scope keyword
- 66 shipped from a region we exclude
- 63 caught by a junk-listing guard
- 8 seller had too few feedback ratings
- 5 priced below our floor (too good to be true)
- 3 wrong condition (e.g. parts-only)
- 1 seller positive-feedback percentage too low
What the feed excludes
An eBay search for Castlevania (NES) returns far more than the game itself: controllers, T-shirts, strategy guides, imports and repro carts all mention it in their titles. These are the 150 terms we filter out to keep this feed to the real thing. A listing whose title contains any of them never reaches the feed, the price table or an alert. Many look unrelated to Castlevania (NES) because they are: that's the noise.

Castlevania: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Product code & save. Check that the code on the label and box matches the US release. Castlevania has no save feature at all: no battery and no passwords. Nothing inside the cart wears out over time, so "tested" just means it boots and plays.
- 5-screw carts. Early NES carts were held together with five screws and later runs with three. Sellers list "5 screw" Castlevania copies as the early variant and often ask more for them. Both are authentic, so check the back of the cart against the claim.
- Box variants drive CIB and graded prices. Sellers of boxed and graded copies call out "hangtab" first-print boxes and the round vs oval Nintendo seal. These details explain much of the gap between two CIB asking prices, so compare like with like.
- Same name, different product. The Japanese original is a Famicom Disk System game ("Akumajou Dracula"). "Classic NES Series: Castlevania" is a Game Boy Advance cart with the same title. Neither plays on a US NES, and the feed leaves both out, along with Castlevania II: Simon's Quest and III: Dracula's Curse. The Genesis entry is Castlevania: Bloodlines. Symphony of the Night has its own page too.
- Check single-word titles. At least one listing titled only "Castlevania ... MANUAL" was selling the manual by itself. Read the photos before you assume a cart is included.
Related pages: Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (NES), Castlevania III (NES).
Buying NES games: what to check by condition
These checks apply to every NES cartridge. The item notes above cover what is specific to this game.
Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
