StarTropics: collector & reseller spec sheet
- Release & saves: StarTropics is a 1990 Nintendo-published NES game for the US market. It saves to a battery-backed cartridge, and a 30-year-old save battery can be dead, so budget for a replacement whatever the seller says.
- The letter: Complete copies are usually advertised with the "Uncle Steve" letter that came in the box, which the game refers to. It is the main difference between a plain CIB and a "complete with letter" copy, and asking prices for the latter run higher. Check that the photos show the letter itself, not just the word in the title.
- Print variants: We can't name a title-specific print variant with confidence, so compare label and cart photos against a known authentic copy.

Buying NES games: what to check by condition

Loose
- Compare the label, shell color and front/back markings against a photo of a known-authentic cart. Repro labels are often glossier, blurrier or slightly off-color.
- Ask for a photo of the board or the back of the cart. An opened shell is not automatically bad (battery swaps are normal), but it should be disclosed.
- If the game saves to a battery, ask whether the save holds. Old save batteries fail with age regardless of what the listing says, so budget for a replacement.
CIB (complete in box)
- Confirm the box, manual and inner tray or insert are all shown in the photos, not just listed in the title.
- Check that the box and manual are the same region and print as the cart. Mixed-and-matched "complete" copies are common.
- Box wear (crushing, tears, sticker residue) moves price far more than the cart does. Judge it from photos, not from the word "mint".
Sealed & graded
- For a graded copy, look the certification number up on the grading company's own site and confirm the photos match the slab you are buying.
- For an ungraded sealed copy, compare the wrap and seal pattern against a known factory-sealed example. Resealing is common, and a reseal on a loose game is worth a loose price.
- Ask for photos of every side, the seams and any price stickers. Refusing extra photos on a sealed listing is a red flag on its own.
